Faceless Friday – 08/12/17

Happy Friday!!! If you’re making the big trip to Dublin today for the Christmas shopping, happy shopping day ya massive culchie ๐Ÿ˜‚

What I’m trying for mental (and physical) improvement…

Hot Yoga – I’ve always wanted to get properly into yoga and in particular hot yoga but for one reason or another I’ve always more dabbled than actually gotten fully engaged. I’ve loved the idea for so long of finding my centre through active meditation while also improving my physical health. I noted earlier this year the mental benefits of being able to switch off from the stresses of work and life while going through my most recent dabbling phase but for long term the times never seemed to really suit and it became more hassle than it was worth. They also have zero parking in the studio I went to which needed additional and annoying planning. Anyway a recent change of apartment for me allowed me to tactically position my life 100 metres from the gym and 800 metres from the Hot Yoga studio. This was no coincidence boys ๐Ÿ˜Ž Make things easy and you’ll do it. And I have done it! I should mention that an almost 4 month lay off with a back injury also meant hot yoga was a no brainier for improved recovery as I’m working my way back! I’ve embraced it, and I can’t see myself letting it go any time soon! The past 6 or so weeks I’ve gone almost solidly every Wednesday and Saturday, it’s strangely addictive. Don’t get me wrong by what I’m about to say next, it certainly is a tough workout setting you back around 500-600 calories easily within the hour but I’m not there for a physical workout. I’m there for me. And only me! I recently noticed that I have zero idea who’s been coming and going to that class! Aside from the instructor I’ve no idea, the reason? I’ve been practicing with my eyes closed more and more, only opening to check form or to check the instructors form and how I should be doing it. It’s about me and centring me on the now. If you’re Continue reading

Faceless Friday – 24/11/17

What’s up guys, Happy Friday. Here are some bits and pieces from the last week:

Anย  exercise variation I’m trying out…

Reverse Pull down on the Diverging Lat Pull Down machine – the diverging movement when you flip this exercise around really focuses the attention on the Rhomboid major and lower trap muscle. Aim for your the bottom of the movement to have your hands ending just behind and below your ears! Use lower weight here to ensure you focus on the above mucles, otherwise you will engage the arms much more.

What I’m listening to…

I’ve been a big fan of Tim Ferris’ blog for quite some time but just this week listened to one of his top 10 all time Podcasts featuring Charles Poliquin. What an amazing character, and what an amazing 2 hours or so of content. They speak at length about strength training, what exercises you should forget about, what supplements you should be taking for health benefits, meat eating versus vegan for training, where to go to find medical information…..It really is an amazing listen.

I usually listen to my podcasts while working out but this was one I just couldn’t stop listening to after my session finished. So many tips is here, for sure check it out!!

What I’m Supplementing…

Apple Cider Vinegar – Perhaps not a supplement inย  Continue reading

Week 6: Recap

A hectic week by all accounts but managed to stay true to my training and plan. A real clash of work commitments couple with gym goals, this was a testing week but I’ve come through it more motivated than ever. My body is really beginning to kick itself into shape and a few additional minor adjustments should really amplify the results I’m seeing, I’m right where I want to be! It’s the half way point and I must say I’m enjoying the training as much as ever, no lapse, and this has to hold in the next 6 weeks as work is becoming nuts again.

Really happy that I am continuing to push myself not just in every workout but in every rep!

Dieting, work and using Lent to my advantage

Lent is upon us, and being the good little catholic that I am I decided to give up a few of my favourite things, which by no coincidence at all (If God is watching) coincides directly with my fitness goals!

My diet in general is quite good but presents two different challenges as I transition from working week to weekend!

Work

In work, it’s all about meetings; planned meetings, unplanned meetings, meetings that run over…why o why do they always run over! ๐Ÿ˜ก Typically at a conservative estimate I probably find myself in meetings between 20 and 25 hours a week, maybe more! As a result it can be hard to regulate my meals! I figured that meals requiring forks are out when flexibility is needed! Sandwiches with whole grain bread and a chicken breast has become the option to ensure I eat! I have grown quite comfortable pulling my lunch out in senior management meetings! On the plus side it makes it look like I work really hard, which I do ๐Ÿ‘ Continue reading

Week 4: Recap

Week 4 was a fantastic training week, which featured a proper weekend bender at the end of it – unfortunately! Week 4 represents the final week of phase 1 of my programme, 8 weeks to go!

Very happy with progress to date, beginning to position myself to attack my personal bests!

I Feel Strong!

Captain Morgans + 5 mixers for 60 euro…I have some of that I thought three different times over the weekend…fml!

Week 2: Progress

It feels great to be back, I repeat, great to be back. Week 2 was a little tougher, work hours piled back on making things more difficult. There’s always going to be another deadline, another obstacle, or something in your life which tries to throw you off your plan. For me, I hit all my planned sessions this week despite the timing of some being later in the evening or converted to home sessions.

I feel strong, I feel I’m getting back to where I’ve been previously, confident under the weight but no where near my PB yet. In terms of cardio, I’ve not yet gotten into the rhythm of my interval training, this is due mainly to the time constraint i’m under with work, Instead I’ve been using my commute as cardio, walking everyday for at least 25 minute, some days twice a day. It’s perfect for what I need right now.

Week 1: Recap

Feels amazing to be back training again, I’ve realised over the Christmas period that and un-organised lifestyle really does not suit me. I need structure, rules, planning and to sleep regular hours. Christmas was awesome, met some great old friends and spent some great time with my family, then again lucky it only comes once a year.

It’s now the first week of January and I always like to look for distance events in the calendar to aim for, it’s 11 weeks to Paddy’s day and 12 weeks to Easter. These are two big drinking events in an Irish man’s calendar. The Euros are 12 weeks from Easter, my birthday is 12 weeks from the Euros, and Christmas is 12 weeks from my birthday. Also a two week holiday with my girlfriend in August is planned. So I have milestones everywhere. Continue reading
